The Xinjiang Police Files, a collection of confidential documents hacked from Chinese police computers and released in 2022, reveal details about the detention of Uyghur Muslims. These files contain records of 830,000 individuals and confirm the sentencing of two brothers, Sattar Kadir and Yusuf Ahmed Kadir, who received "illegal religious education" from their mother Rozi between 2004-2008. While Rozi's arrest is noted, her sentence isn't specified.
Since 2017, China has detained an estimated 1.8 million Uyghurs in what they call "vocational training centers," though these are widely understood to be internment camps. Many Uyghurs have been imprisoned for practicing Islam or sending their children to study religion in countries like Egypt and Turkey. Those charged with providing "illegal religious education" typically receive 10-20 year sentences, while their children receive sentences under 10 years.
