The US administration added 17 individuals and organizations involved in the international proliferation of equipment used in the manufacture of drugs, to the sanctions list.
In a statement from the US Department of the Treasury, it was reported that OFAC had targeted individuals and organizations directly or indirectly associated with the sale of equipment used in the production of illicit fentanyl pills.
It also stated in the statement that the sanctions target one organization and 3 persons based in Mexico, including 7 organizations and 6 persons based in China, and that the actions against organizations and individuals based in Mexico were coordinated in cooperation with the Mexican government.
Brian Nelson, the US Treasury's undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, noted that the sanctions target every stage of the deadly supply chain, which is fueling the increase in fentanyl poisoning and deaths across the country.
Responsible for the death of thousands of Americans
Nelson also noted that counterfeit pills containing fentanyl kill thousands of Americans each year, adding, "We are determined to use all powers against those who facilitate the production of illegal drugs to disrupt this deadly global production and address the threat these drugs pose."
