UK: China, the biggest global problem

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that China poses the world's greatest challenge to global security and prosperity.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that China poses the world's greatest challenge to global security and prosperity, but other leading economies should not try to break away from China completely.

"China poses the greatest challenge of our time to global security and prosperity, becoming increasingly authoritarian at home and activating its influence abroad," Sunak told reporters after the G7 summit in Hiroshima.

Noting that the UK and other G7 countries will take a common approach to reduce the difficulties created by China, Sunak said: “This is all about risk reduction, not apartheid. Together with the G7, we are taking steps to prevent China from using economic pressure to interfere in sovereign affairs to others."

On 25 July 2022, the former Finance Minister, Rishi Sunak, one of the Conservative prime ministerial candidates, stated in a speech that China is the greatest long-term threat to economic and national security in the UK and worldwide, and that if he becomes prime minister, he will be tougher on China, and promised to close all thirty Confucian Institutes in the United Kingdom.
