Two Guineans die in protests against Chinese mining company

Two Guineans died in protests against a Chinese mining company in the country.
According to Voice of America news today, the Guinean news agency and local officials revealed on October 14 that a protest against the Chinese mining company established in eastern Guinea has erupted, and at least two people have died in the conflict between security forces and the people.
Four more people were injured and about 40 arrested in protests against the Chinese company in Konkoi, near the Mali border, on Saturday, according to the Guinean news agency.
A local Guinean reporter told AFP that the protests were triggered by local residents because of the pollution of the local environment by the China Gold Mining Company and the destruction of the villagers' fertile farmland. During the demonstration, the protestors shouted slogans accusing China of destroying fertile lands.
The reporter said that the protest turned into a conflict, and a 25-year-old man was shot in the chest and died.
A person who fled the village in the early stages of the conflict told Agence France-Presse: "This unfortunate situation was caused by the use of live ammunition and tear gas by the defense and security forces against the protesters."
It turns out that many Chinese companies have extensive mining operations in Guinea, which has rich bauxite deposits as well as iron ore and gold reserves. Despite the country's rich natural resources, the military has been ruling the country since the 2021 coup. The West African country is one of the least developed countries in the world, and currently protests against Chinese companies have not been violently suppressed.
