Trump Announces Additional 10% Tariffs on Chinese Goods

The Trump administration has announced it will impose additional 10% tariffs on Chinese goods starting next week, bringing the total additional tariffs to 20%.

According to Voice of America, the Trump administration has escalated pressure on China, announcing it will add 10% tariffs on Chinese goods starting March 4. This brings the tariffs imposed on China to 20%, in addition to the tariffs imposed at the beginning of February.

Trump explained that the 10% tariffs on imports from China were added on top of the previous 10% tariffs, noting that the reason is the large quantities of fentanyl coming from China into the United States.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce criticized the United States for shifting responsibility to others and emphasized its own laws. It called for resolving the problem through dialogue and claimed that the tariff decision violates World Trade Organization rules. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce also stated that if the United States continues its current practices, China will defend its rights.

According to available information, more than 74,000 people died in the United States in 2023 due to opioid drug overdoses, with China being considered the main source of the precursor chemicals for fentanyl. Despite escalating tensions, China and the United States previously reported that they had cooperated in the field of drug control.
