The European Parliament has passed a law against China

The European Parliament has passed a resolution calling for the repeal of the so-called "national security law" applied by the Chinese authorities in Hong Kong.

The decision was widely supported among parliamentarians, with 483 parliamentarians voting yes, 9 voted no, while 42 abstained. The resolution demands the immediate release of Li Jing, the founder of the Apple Daily on June 15, and the cancellation of the so-called "national security law".

The European Parliament resolution calls on the Hong Kong government to immediately and unconditionally release Li Jing and drop the charges against activists who support freedom of expression. He also demands that the Hong Kong authorities stop obstructing the work and movements of journalists.

Why Apple's daily newspaper is important

Li Jing, a British citizen, founded Apple Daily in 1995, a popular newspaper in Hong Kong. However, the newspaper was forcibly closed by the Chinese regime and the pro-Chinese Hong Kong authorities in 2021. It is known that 75-year-old Li Jing has been held in the highest security prison in Hong Kong since 2020.

The arrest of Li Jing and the forced closure of the Apple Daily are a striking example of the rapid erosion of press freedom and other fundamental rights in Hong Kong since 2020. China's so-called "national security law" charges anyone who dares to speak out against the Chinese Communist Party with alleged separatism, terrorism, extremism or collusion with foreign powers. The decision taken by the European Parliament once again reveals China's dark side.
