The British police have formed a new force to deal with threats from adversarial nations such as China and Russia.
According to Voice of America on January 20, British police departments have established a new agency to address the growing threat from China, Russia, and Iran. This agency will closely collaborate with Britain's intelligence agencies, MI5 and MI6. The police within the agency will be responsible for security matters leading up to this year's national elections.
Matt Jukes, the head of the counter-terrorism department at the London Metropolitan Police, stated that Britain is facing its most significant threat from adversarial nations since the Cold War. The workload for the London Metropolitan Police in dealing with espionage and foreign interference has quadrupled since the Salisbury attacks in 2018. He told reporters, "Specifically, what we want to counter is state institutions in Iran, China, and Russia."
It's worth noting that the United Kingdom passed the "National Security Law" in 2023, introducing new categories such as espionage, foreign interference, and communicating with foreign powers as criminal offenses. Through this law, actions like espionage, theft of trade secrets, or influencing the political system can be prosecuted, attempting to make interference more challenging.
Matt Jukes states that there is more misinformation on the internet than there was in the previous British elections. Additionally, the police are also concerned about plots to assassinate opposition or political dissidents.
A report released by Microsoft in November of last year showed that Russia, Iran, and China might interfere with the U.S. presidential elections this year, as well as crucial elections in other parts of the world, using various and sophisticated methods.
