British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is due to visit China at the end of this month on a long-awaited visit that seeks to stabilize a troubled relationship that has reached its lowest point in decades, three informed sources said.
The British Foreign Office said it would announce smart travel plans "in the usual way". The Chinese foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The trip is expected to last only two days and has been "scaled back from the original plan," according to one of the sources.
The three sources requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.
Cleverley will be the highest-ranking British official to visit China since the pandemic, after relations deteriorated over issues including Beijing's crackdown in Hong Kong and its treatment of Uyghurs in East Turkistan.
