While marriage rates in China have fallen to their lowest levels, the divorce rate continues to rise.
According to CNN on February 10, the number of marriages in China in 2024 fell to a historic low, with only 6.1 million marriages registered. This represents a 20.5% decrease compared to the previous year. This decline represents a continuing trend over 10 years, leading to significant pressure on the Chinese economy due to a declining workforce and population aging.
It was reported that despite the Chinese regime implementing measures such as economic incentives and propaganda to encourage marriage and childbirth to alleviate these pressures, rising living costs, unemployment, and changing attitudes toward marriage have led to increased cases of delayed or avoided marriages among young people.
The Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs announced second quarter data for 2024 on August 2 last year. It showed that 3.43 million people registered for marriage in the first half of last year, down 12.7% from the same period. The number of married people in China has declined for five consecutive years since 2019.
The Chinese regime has changed its birth control policy to solve the population crisis, raising the child limit from one to three. It has also implemented various measures to encourage early marriage and more childbirth, such as cash rewards for early marriage, birth allowances, and extended maternity leave. However, these measures have not succeeded in changing China's population decline trend.
However, while China attempts to increase its population, it continues to commit genocide crimes in East Turkistan, including forced sterilization of Uyghur women and forced abortions.
The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) indicated in a report published in 2021 that China's genocide crimes in East Turkistan led to an unprecedented decline in birth rates, dropping by 48.74% in just two years from 2017 to 2019, a rate exceeding population declines during the Syrian civil war or the genocides in Rwanda and Cambodia.
