According to Voice of America, Pastor David Lin, an American citizen who was imprisoned in China for about 20 years, was recently released. But he is not the only American mistakenly abducted by China, and some US lawmakers have called on the State Department to step up diplomatic efforts to quickly free Americans held in China.
Republican Rep. Chris Smith, chairman of the US House China Affairs Committee, called on the State Department on September 18 to provide better legal services to families of wrongfully detained Americans and to allow more visits to hostages. At the same time, it has stepped up diplomatic efforts to put pressure on China to demand the release of these Americans, even through the executive order signed by US President Joe Biden in 2022 to "diligently return hostages and wrongfully abducted US citizens" to relevant Chinese officials.
"If China wants to improve relations with the United States, they should unconditionally release the Americans they wrongly kidnapped," Smith told the hearing. They should unilaterally stop the ``exit ban. "China's behavior is actually taking people hostage, and it violates the United Nations Charter."
According to statistics, at least 200 US citizens are currently subject to various forms of coercive measures by the Chinese regime, including administrative detention, pre-trial detention, and surveillance.
