Some progress but further action needed to hold China accountable for grave human rights violations

Two years after the landmark OHCHR assessment on the Uyghur region, global scrutiny of China's human rights abuses remains strong at the UN.
At the UN Human Rights Council and General Assembly, countries have reiterated calls for China to implement the OHCHR's recommendations to address abuses in East Turkistan (Xinjiang), Tibet, Hong Kong, and across China.
The OHCHR report on East Turkistan, which found potential crimes against humanity, has been repeatedly referenced and discussed at the UN, with demands for China to cooperate.
Civil society and human rights groups have amplified calls for accountability, including highlighting individual cases like Gulshan Abbas and Ekpar Asat.
Despite this international pressure, China has continued to deny, deflect, and reject the findings, refusing to meaningfully engage with UN mechanisms.
There are growing calls for the UN to establish a dedicated monitoring and reporting mechanism on China's rights situation and for the High Commissioner to maintain public scrutiny.
