Philippines says it will sue China

Philippine Justice Minister Crispin Remulla announced on January 23 that the Philippine government will file another complaint against China's environmental violations in the South China Sea at an international legal forum.
According to Voice of America, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously spoke by phone with Philippine Foreign Minister Enrique Manalo, condemning China's dangerous actions that destabilize the South China Sea and reaffirming America's rock-solid commitment to protecting the Philippines.
In 2016, the Philippines first filed a case at the International Arbitration Court challenging China's claim of sovereignty over the entire South China Sea. The court ruled that China's nine-dash line claim had no legal basis.
The Philippines is now preparing to file a second complaint, focusing on China's actions in the Philippine Economic Zone, including:
Irregular capture of giant clam mollusks
Severe damage to coral reefs
China had previously refused to participate in the 2016 arbitration process and did not acknowledge the ruling. Instead, it intensified its maritime police and naval presence in disputed areas after the judgment.
