Thousands of people have demonstrated in London against China's plans to build a massive embassy. The British government is expected to decide on the project later this month.
China's plan to build a large embassy on the site of the former Royal Mint in London is a controversial issue in Britain, and large demonstrations have already been held against it. On May 3, thousands of people, mostly from Hong Kong, demonstrated outside the Royal Mint, holding signs reading "Bowing to China is eternal defeat" and chanting slogans. This is the third large-scale demonstration this year against the construction of the massive Chinese embassy.
The organizers of the demonstration marched around the Royal Mint, and representatives from Hong Kong, Tibet, and Ukraine spoke at the demonstration. In their speeches, they emphasized that China's plan to build a massive embassy would in fact bring cross-border repression, surveillance, and other threats to foreign residents in the UK, and called on the British government to halt the plan.
In recent years, in addition to the secret "police stations" China has established in various countries, the involvement of Chinese embassies, consulates, and diplomats in repression and surveillance abroad has been exposed. For this reason, any Chinese expansion plans have become a focus of scrutiny.
