Malaysian think tank urges Organization of Islamic Cooperation to take action on Uyghurs

Bait Al Aamanah, one of Malaysia's leading think tanks, has published a research report on the policy of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on the Uyghur issue and called on the organizations of 57 Muslim countries to abide by their statutes and principles on the Uyghur issue.

The report emphasized that the time has come to comply with the Statute and Principles of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation against the double standards that violate the religious beliefs, political freedom and human rights of the Uyghurs. The organization's charter states that "the principles of ensuring the rights, dignity, cultural and religious identity of Muslims must be reflected in the dire situation facing the Uyghurs."

This report is a political analysis report, published for the first time, by a think tank closely linked to the government in a Muslim country, criticizing the OIC's stance on the Uighur issue. The 20-page report, titled "Treatment of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation Charter and the Muslim World's Response," states that "the current response of the Islamic world needs to be compiled and reanalyzed."

According to the report, "The Organization of Islamic Cooperation should convene an extraordinary summit to discuss the fate of the Uyghurs due to the urgency of the Uyghur issue, that the head of the organization, Hüseyin İbrahim Taha, should play an active role in this issue, and that they should cooperate with the Uyghurs and call a special summit on the protection of the Uyghurs."

The report also emphasized the appointment of a special representative of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation responsible for Islamophobia against false statements against the Uyghurs and the entire ummah, and stated that the said representative will open a wide window to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in resolving the tyranny faced by the Uyghurs.

Ms. Nabiela Ismail, an analyst at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, one of the experts who prepared the report, pointed out that it was a great disappointment that many foreign governments turned a blind eye to serious human rights violations in the Uyghur region.

Nabeila Ismail, in an exclusive interview on August 2, said: "We think there is enough evidence of serious human rights violations regarding the fate of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang, but it is very disappointing that so many foreign governments turn a blind eye". "The Chinese Regime tries to simplify its strategy of fighting terrorism and fighting extremism, even in their statements to the UN, by covering up their crimes, and by promoting their repression policies and torture camps as so-called vocational training camps," he said.

In the "Bait Al Aamanah" report, it was noted that it is important to emphasize the indifference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to the Uyghur issue and that "to remain silent about the difficulties faced by the Uyghurs is a serious violation of the Charter of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation".

As emphasized in the 1st article, 14th and 16th sections of the statute, it is stated that "the OIC is the responsibility of the member countries to protect their Muslim brothers in other countries".
