Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu said the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) fired Patriot missiles at Miyako Island in the island prefecture of Okinawa.

Matsuno stated that the missiles launched were intended to ensure national security and would target North Korea's potential long-range ballistic missiles.

According to information in the national press, it was reported that PAC-3 missiles were also launched at the islands of Ishigaki and Yonaguni in the same area.

The islands of Miyako, Yonaguni and Ishigaki in Okinawa in the southwest of the country are known as the closest area of the country to the Taiwan Strait.
