India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire.

Amid worsening tensions between India and Pakistan, US President Donald Trump took to social media on Saturday to announce that India and Pakistan had agreed to an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire after four days of cross-border fighting.

Experts say US diplomatic and regional mediation played a key role in bringing the nuclear-armed rivals back from the brink of war, the BBC reported.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar told local media that more than 30 countries, including Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United States, were involved in the mediation.

But within hours of the ceasefire agreement being announced, India accused Pakistan of repeatedly violating the agreement. Pakistan insisted its troops had acted responsibly and were honouring their ceasefire commitments.

India launched air strikes on Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir last month after a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir killed 26 tourists. In the conflict that lasted several days, both countries claimed to have successfully repelled the other's attacks and inflicted heavy losses.
