China's attempts to bolster its influence at the United Nations continue, and a recent investigation has revealed that the Chinese regime has introduced numerous fake "non-governmental organizations" (NGOs) into UN bodies.
The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) published an investigative report on April 28, in which 42 media outlets participated. The report focused on China's activities at the UN Human Rights Council.
According to the investigative report, 59 of the 106 civil society organizations registered with the UN from China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan have close ties to the Chinese regime or the Chinese Communist Party. These organizations, which pretend to be NGOs, not only side with China at the UN Council but also whitewash China's crimes in their reports.
The report stated that when China's crimes, such as the genocide in East Turkistan and the separation of children from their families in Tibet and East Turkestan, are raised at the UN Human Rights Council, these fake organizations attempt to disrupt the meetings. Due to their large numbers, they receive more opportunities to speak at UN meetings. For example, more than half of the speaking time at the 2024 China Human Rights Review was devoted to these fake pro-China organizations.
The investigation report also noted another unfortunate situation: the participation of activists and individuals opposed to China in UN meetings and activities has fallen to a historic low. Meanwhile, the number of fake Chinese "NGOs" registered with the UN has nearly doubled since 2018.
