On October 18, Fiji was among the countries that condemned China's human rights violations in East Turkistan at a UN conference, and just ten days later, it attempted to withdraw its support for the Uyghurs.
Fiji, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, wants to withdraw from UN support for the Uyghurs, mainly because it fears retaliation from the Chinese regime, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported today.
Fiji was among 51 countries that supported the Uyghurs last week, and was the only Pacific country to have official relations with China.
Some observers were reportedly surprised by Fiji's joining the ranks of Chinese accusations, as Pacific countries with foreign relations with China have generally remained silent or supportive of China's human rights abuses.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation has learned that China has put pressure on the Fiji government to withdraw its decision to charge China, and Fijian officials are now proposing to remove Fiji from the list.
