EU warns China

European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that China's "show of military force could have global repercussions" in the South and East China Seas and the Taiwan Strait.

During her visit to the Philippines, Von der Leyen said in a speech at the Philippines Business Forum that they will increase cooperation with this country to strengthen national security in the Indo-Pacific Region.

"China's show of military force in the South and East China seas and the Taiwan Strait directly affects the Philippines and other partners in the region," EU Commission President von der Leyen said.

"This show of military force could have global repercussions," von der Leyen said, adding, "The weakening of regional stability in Asia, the world's fastest-growing region, affects global security, the free flow of trade and our interests in the region."

Ursula von der Leyen noted that the EU has therefore strengthened its presence in the Indo-Pacific, adding that they "aim to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific."

EU Commission President von der Leyen said China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, "has not fully assumed its responsibility under the UN Charter to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine."

"WE LEARNED FROM THE MISTAKE WE MADE WITH RUSSIA"

"In the past, they made the mistake of thinking that they could manage geopolitical differences with Russia through trade," von der Leyen said, adding, "Today we are stronger and more independent than before. We have learned our lesson, we will not make the same mistake again."

"The Philippines exports more than 90 percent of its nickel mine to China instead of processing it in the country to create jobs and added value, but that could change. That's why I'm in Manila. The Philippines and the EU have a great opportunity to advance the partnership on both trade and investments," he said.

Emphasizing that "the trade agreements with Singapore and Vietnam have yielded results," von der Leyen added that "Europe wants to conclude free trade agreements with other ASEAN countries."
