Economic concerns force Chinese president to hold extraordinary meeting with business leaders

Xi Jinping held a high-level meeting with Chinese business leaders to discuss the risks facing China.

According to the South China Morning Post on February 17, Chinese President Xi Jinping held a meeting with prominent private business owners, including owners of Xiaomi, Alibaba, BYD and Huawei.

The meeting was attended by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and other senior political officials, and the aim of the meeting was to boost confidence in private enterprise in China's economic sphere. Weak domestic demand and increasing external difficulties were the most important reasons.

According to the Policy Research Center, if Xi Jinping can show a supportive attitude towards the commercial sector, it may have a positive impact on the economy. Conversely, if Xi Jinping emphasizes government control over private businesses, it may exacerbate the deterioration of the market situation in China. This meeting is one of Xi Jinping's rare activities, as the previous similar meeting was held in September 2018.
