East Asian foreign ministers meet with Wang Yi

Amid heightened tensions in the South China Sea, East Asian foreign ministers met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
According to Voice of America, senior foreign officials from Asian countries held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Laos on July 26. This coincided with the period when China increased its efforts to promote large-scale maritime sovereignty disputes in the South China Sea, which led to the escalation of conflicts.
There are territorial disputes between several East Asian countries and China, which have even led to direct conflict. There are also growing concerns that it could escalate into a larger-scale conflict.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said before meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi: "With one wrong step in the South Seas, a small fire can turn into a terrible conflagration."
It turns out that ASEAN member countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei are all at odds with China, and Indonesia is also concerned about China's encroachment on its exclusive economic zone. China claims almost all of the South China Sea, one of the world's most important shipping lanes.
At the same time, the US and its allies continue to conduct regular military exercises and surveillance in the region to defend their "free and open Indo-Pacific" policy. This includes the right to free navigation in international seas, of which China has been accused.
