US sends land-attack missile system to Philippines for exercises in apparent message to China

The United States has deployed a new Typhoon ground-attack missile system to the Philippines, which it claims is designed to deter China.
According to the BBC on April 19, the US military has recently deployed a ground-attack missile launch system in the northern Philippines. The strike system, called the Typhoon, is a medium-range surface-to-air missile launch system that has not been involved in the ongoing two-week joint exercise Strong Shield-24.
This is the first launch of a new land-based missile system in the "first island chain.". The missile has a range of more than 2,000 kilometers and can hit the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, which are coastal areas and sensitive areas. Experts see the system as a warning to China as well as a signal about US military defense capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region.
In response to the US action, China immediately issued a high-level counterattack signal and announced that it had held military talks with Cuban military leaders in Beijing. This situation is a reflection of the intensification of the triangular relationship between the US-Philippines-China.
Researchers say the Typhoon weapon system is a medium-range missile treaty-era capability that can be transported by heavy transport aircraft and deployed to combat zones in a short period of time.
