Czech Chamber of Deputies Approves Resolution Criticizing China's Interpretation of UN Resolution 2758 and Supporting Taiwan's International Participation
On December 12, 2024, the Czech Chamber of Deputies' Foreign Affairs Committee adopted a resolution that criticizes the People's Republic of China (PRC) for misinterpreting the United Nations' (UN) Resolution 2758 to legitimize its sovereignty claims over Taiwan and confirms support for Taiwan's participation in international organizations.
Passed with cross-party support, the resolution opposes Beijing's misinterpretation of Resolution 2758, stating that China's interpretation distorts the original purpose of the resolution.
6TH PARLIAMENTARY MOTION UNDER IPAC INITIATIVE
Similar resolutions have previously been adopted in countries like Australia, the Netherlands, the European Union, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This resolution is the sixth parliamentary motion approved under the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China's (IPAC) "2758 Initiative."
The IPAC's "2758 Initiative," aimed at challenging China's narrative and strengthening Taiwan's presence in international forums, was approved by over 50 members at a meeting in Taipei in July, with IPAC Czech Co-Chair Eva Decroix among the signatories.
In a press release, IPAC condemned China's increasing military provocations in the Taiwan Strait and called on the European Union and its member states to support Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations.
Representative Eva Decroix, who played a significant role in the resolution's adoption, stated, "This resolution sends a clear message: Taiwan's security is vital to maintaining a rules-based international system. We must stand against China's military provocations and attempts to distort UN resolutions for its own interests. I am proud that the Czech Parliament has taken a stance on this matter today."
TAIWAN'S STRUGGLE FOR EXISTENCE
Beijing has long pursued its goal of annexing Taiwan by applying diplomatic, economic, and military pressure to isolate Taiwan internationally.
Despite these efforts, Taiwan continues to maintain its independence, supported by its people.
