Japan has indicated that Chinese-backed hackers were behind cyberattacks targeting government institutions, politicians, and private companies between 2019-2024.
In a statement made by the Japanese National Police Agency (NPA), government institutions and businesses were urged to take precautions against cyberattacks.
The Japanese National Police Agency (NPA) announced that more than 200 cyberattacks "targeting national security and high-tech data" were carried out in the last 5 years.
The statement indicated that a Chinese-backed hacker group called "MirrorFace" targeted the Foreign and Defense Ministries, space agency, politicians, journalists, private companies, and some think tanks.
The statement noted that the group sent emails containing malicious software attachments to targets using stolen credentials, and that these emails' subject lines generally included keywords such as "Japan-US alliance", "Taiwan Strait", "Russia-Ukraine War" and "free and open Indo-Pacific".
The statement called on government institutions and businesses to take precautions against cyberattacks.
Japan Airlines (JAL) announced in December 2024 that some flights were delayed due to a cyberattack on the network connecting their internal and external systems, stating that at least 24 domestic flights were delayed by approximately 1 hour and some international flights were also negatively affected.
In February 2024, it was alleged that confidential diplomatic documents belonging to Japan were leaked in China's cyberattacks on the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2020.
