Chinese Envoy Meets with New Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara
The Chinese special envoy met with the new Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara in the first bilateral meeting between China and the new Syrian leadership after Assad's fall.
According to the "South China Morning Post" on February 22, China had been a continuous supporter of Bashar al-Assad, and after the collapse of the Assad regime last December, the Chinese embassy in Damascus was looted.
Syrian official media reported on Friday that the new Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara publicly met with the Chinese ambassador for the first time in a bilateral meeting.
According to reports, after the fall of the Chinese-backed Assad regime, the Chinese embassy in Damascus was looted by unknown individuals. The new Syrian government has also integrated foreign fighters, including Uyghurs who fled Chinese persecution and who supported the Syrian people in liberating their country, into the Syrian Defense Forces.
The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that Ahmad al-Shara met with Chinese Special Envoy Xi Hongwei without providing details on the content of the discussions.
It's worth noting that Chinese President Xi Jinping had previously promised to support Assad against foreign interventions. During 2023, Syrian officials visited China, despite having been internationally isolated for many years due to sanctions imposed on them since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
During this period, Xi Jinping received Assad and his wife in official ceremonies, showing hospitality and creating a rare opportunity on the international stage.
