China tightens grip on Hong Kong with new law

By passing Article 23 of the Hong Kong Basic Law, China has intensified its oppression of the Hong Kong people .
According to a report by Radio France International on March 19, Hong Kong's Legislative Council passed Article 23 of the Basic Law without opposition, and the relevant provisions were included in Hong Kong's version of the so-called "National Security Law" that took effect in June 2020. The speed of consideration of Article 23 was very fast, and it took only 11 days from the submission of the draft law to the Legislative Council on March 8 until its approval on March 19. Hong Kong Chief Executive Li Jiachao also cut down on time to attend the meeting in Beijing and returned to Hong Kong on March 5 to speed up the legislative process.
It turns out that Article 23 of the Basic Law requires Hong Kong authorities to enact laws that severely punish crimes such as “treason, subversion, espionage, theft of state secrets, undermining national security, sedition and foreign interference.”
It also turned out that this article of the law was suspended for a long time, and in 2003, due to mass protests, China's first attempt to enact a national security law failed.
