Reporters Without Borders, the non-governmental organization that defends press freedom, today announced its 2025 World Press Freedom Index, in which China fell to third place from the worst.
This year, the organization has been conducting this assessment since 2002, and 180 countries were evaluated. China fell six places from last year to 178th. The United States also fell 10 places to 57th. Norway ranked first in terms of press freedom, while Eritrea ranked last.
In this year's report, for the first time, Reporters Without Borders confirmed the general decline in press freedom worldwide. It also noted the negative impact of the global economic downturn on the media sector.
China is currently the country with the highest number of imprisoned journalists in the world, the vast majority of whom are Uyghurs.
