The non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders, which advocates for press freedom, today released its 2025 World Press Freedom Index, with China falling further behind, coming in at third place.
The organization, which has been evaluating 180 countries since 2002, ranked 178th, down six places from last year. The United States dropped 10 places from last year, coming in at 57th. Norway ranked first in terms of press freedom, while the African country Eritrea ranked last.
For the first time, Reporters Without Borders confirmed a general decline in press freedom worldwide in its annual report. It also mentioned the negative impact of the global economic recession on the media sector.
China is currently the world's largest jailer of journalists, the vast majority of whom are Uyghurs.
