China summoned the Japanese ambassador to the Foreign Ministry and presented a protest.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry website on February 10, Liu Jinsong, head of the Asian Affairs Department at the Chinese Foreign Ministry, met with the Japanese ambassador to China and expressed protest over the anti-China content in the recent US-Japan joint statement issued during talks between Japanese and American leaders.
According to reports, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated in his statement the same day that China strongly opposes Japan's and the United States' statements regarding China and firmly stands against both parties' positions.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba visited Washington last week and held his first high-level meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday. In the joint statement issued after the meeting, both parties expressed their firm opposition to China's attempts to change the status quo in the East China Sea and opposed China's illegal sovereignty claims in the South China Sea, its military activities, and acts of threats and provocation. The leaders also emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and their support for Taiwan's participation in international organizations.
