The Chinese news agency (Xinhua) reported that Liu Jinsong, Director-General of the Asian Affairs Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, summoned the Minister Plenipotentiary of the Japanese Embassy to China, Yokochi Akira, to lodge a serious official protest and express serious concerns and strong dissatisfaction with the “negative moves.” To Japan during the Japan-US summit in Washington and during the tripartite summit between the United States, Japan, and the Philippines.

A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo said that China urges Japan to respect China's fundamental interests and major concerns, seriously implement the important consensus on comprehensively advancing mutually beneficial strategic relations between the two countries, abandon beggar-thy-neighbor practices, and stop interfering in China's internal affairs, to avoid further damage to Sino-Japanese relations.
