US President Donald Trump Targets Online Retail Giants Temu and Shein with Tariff Policy
According to the US Consumer News on February 3rd, President Trump signed an executive order last Saturday imposing tariffs on the country's top three trading partners. This includes:
The tariffs will officially take effect from February 4th.
The report noted that the tariff order canceled the "de minimis" trade exemption, which previously allowed duty-free entry for postal shipments valued under $800.
Though this exemption has existed since the 1930s, its continuation has been under review in recent years. The Biden administration previously implemented measures in September to restrict excessive use and potential abuse of this provision.
Officials argued that this rule allowed Chinese online retail companies like Temu and Shein to undercut competitors through extremely low pricing. They also expressed concerns about product safety, noting that small postal shipments require fewer documents and less rigorous inspections.
Additionally, China's Public Security Ministry criticized the US decision to impose 10% tariffs on all Chinese imports, claiming it would undermine cooperation in combating fentanyl trafficking.
