The United States imposes sanctions on Chinese companies and individuals linked to cyber attacks

In addition to punishing Chinese companies and individuals involved in cyberattacks, the US government has charged seven Chinese hackers with involvement in global cyberattacks.
According to Voice of America, the US government announced on March 25 that it had imposed sanctions on a Chinese company and two Chinese nationals linked to the company, who are accused of supporting the Chinese regime. These hackers launched several malicious cyberattacks against critical US infrastructure. Meanwhile, the US government also charged seven hackers, including two Chinese, with participating in global cyberattacks targeting political opponents, politicians and US companies.
According to a statement from the US Treasury Department, the sanctioned Chinese company is Wuhan Xiaojie Technology Co., Ltd., a front company for the Chinese Ministry of Security. The sanctions come as part of a joint effort between the US Department of Justice, the FBI, the State Department and the British government.
The US Treasury says Chinese regime-sponsored malicious cyber activity remains one of the largest and most persistent threats to US national security.
The US Treasury Department said in a statement that the Chinese hacking network “APT31” targeted senior officials, their advisors, and members of Congress in the White House, the Department of Justice, the Department of Commerce, the Department of the Treasury, and the Department of State.
The hacker network consists of a group of Chinese intelligence agents working in the Hubei Provincial Security Directorate, part of the Chinese Ministry of Security, who conduct electronic espionage operations on behalf of the Chinese regime. In 2010, they founded Wuhan Xiaoji Technology Co., Ltd., which they used to hide their cyberespionage activities.
