Canada has declared that 85 Chinese research institutions pose a threat to Canadian national security, and China has protested against this.
According to the Canadian Global News network, the Canadian government released a list on January 16 containing more than 100 foreign research institutions in China, Russia, and Iran, with 85 of them affiliated with China. The decision stipulates that these agencies have connections with local military and security agencies in China and that these agencies pose a threat to the security of Canada and sensitive research institutions. Researchers working with the listed agencies cannot obtain funding from the Canadian federal government.
According to AFP and Reuters, among the 103 institutions announced by the Canadian government, there are 85 Chinese research institutions, including the National University of Defense Technology, the Chinese Academy of Military Sciences, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Harbin Engineering University, Hunan University, Sichuan University, Tianjin University, and Xi'an University of Technology. In addition, there are 12 research institutions in Iran and six in Russia.
The Chinese embassy in Canada has protested against the statement, claiming that Canada has politicized relations and scientific and technological cooperation under the guise of national security threats, undermining trust and cooperation between the Chinese and Canadian scientific and technological communities.
