Belgian politician accused of spying for China

A mayor in Belgium has been accused of secretly collaborating with China, monitoring and gathering information about a member of parliament who criticized China on the Uyghur issue. He was warned by Belgian security services.

According to a report by Al-Siyasa, Chinese intelligence services began approaching Eric Dosogne, the then-mayor of Huys, Belgium, in 2020. Dosogne strengthened relations by establishing sister city ties with China and agreed to monitor and provide information about former member of parliament Samuel Cogolati, who had criticized China on the Uyghur issue.

Samuel Cogolati, who was subjected to surveillance, was one of the sponsors of a bill condemning China's repression of the Uyghurs in 2021, and his computer was attacked by Chinese hackers at the time.

This isn't the first time Belgium has discovered a Chinese spy. In 2023, former Member of Parliament Frank Creyelman was accused of spying for China.

Recently, a series of Chinese espionage activities in various countries and organizations have been exposed, revealing China's true face to the world.
