Over the past year, the United States, the European Union, and Japan have increased their military presence in the South China Sea to counter rising tensions with China, on the basis of protecting sovereignty and abiding by international law.
According to Nikkei Asia on March 7, China continues to claim sovereignty over areas of the South China Sea, leading to disputes with several Southeast Asian countries, especially the Philippines, which has faced aggressive actions from Chinese coast guard vessels.
In the past, a French aircraft carrier has conducted military exercises in the region. Germany and the United States have also ended their long absence from the region and resumed important military naval activities. Japan has conducted bilateral military exercises with the Malaysian military, emphasizing the strategic importance of the region to the security of international waters.
Although China continues to escalate its aggressive actions, analysts do not expect an immediate confrontation, as both the United States and China are likely to seek to ease tensions in times of crisis.
