Swedish Parliamentarian Jonas Sjöstedt, who traveled to Kashgar in East Turkistan via bus through Kyrgyzstan, reported that the Chinese government's oppression against Uyghur Turks could be seen everywhere, with heavily armed police patrolling the streets.

Diplomat Sjöstedt made a statement on his social media account on September 28, 2023, "Kashgar was as amazing as I imagined. There were ancient streets, street life and a distinctive Uyghur culture that was very reminiscent of other Central Asian countries. The city was built during the heyday of the Silk Road. A person could walk around for hours and visit tea houses and mosques. But..." he used his expressions.
Sjöstedt also debunked the propaganda of some misguided China enthusiasts from the Turkic and Islamic world who have visited East Turkistan, claiming that "everything is normal there, and Uyghurs are very happy." He stated, "China's oppression against Uyghurs has always been present. Heavily armed police were visible on the streets, and surveillance cameras were everywhere. More than a million Uyghurs have been placed in detention camps for hunger, torture, and sexual abuse. China is trying to erase their culture."

Furthermore, Sjöstedt noted the silence of Turkic states in Central Asia and the inadequate response from the West regarding the Uyghur genocide. He said, "China is powerful and punishes countries that raise their voices. Central Asian countries are becoming increasingly dependent on China as their economic partner. However, even in the West, the voices for the Uyghur cause are very weak."

Lastly, he emphasized the large number of innocent Uyghur Turks detained in detention camps and the so-called "Sibling Family" genocide policy.
