Last week, bipartisan legislation was introduced in the US Senate to hold the Chinese authorities accountable for their violations against the Uyghurs.
According to voice of America Radio News on June 6, US senators Marco Rubio and Jeff Merkley, on May 31, introduced a law on the search and punishment of the genocide against the Uyghurs (UGASA), a brutal crime committed by the Chinese authorities in East Turkistan.
The law on the search and punishment of genocide against Uyghurs is based on the previously passed law on the human rights policy of Uyghurs and the law on the Prevention of forced labor of Uyghurs, which aims to combat gross violations of human rights by the Chinese Communist Party.
The bill is said to be aimed at strengthening sanctions and visa restrictions against Chinese officials and entities involved in the genocide against Uyghurs, by the United States. The bill includes important provisions such as expanded sanctions and visa restrictions for officials involved in genocidal crimes against Uyghurs and other Turkic people.
The bill also requires US government agencies to provide decisive assistance to the victims of the genocide and protect the cultural and linguistic heritage of Uyghurs who fled from China and are living in the diaspora.
Senator Marco Rubio stressed the importance of tightening sanctions against Chinese authorities and companies responsible for genocide crimes.
