According to Chinese media reports, on July 17, a fire broke out in a shopping mall in Zigong City, Sichuan Province, killing 16 people and leaving dozens of Chinese people trapped.
Footage broadcast by China's Central Television and shared on social media showed thick black smoke billowing from a skyscraper in the city of Zigong. The fire reportedly started in a mall on the ground floor of the building.
According to Central Television, about 30 people were rescued, and the fire was extinguished at around 8:20 pm local time.
Zigong city authorities issued a report on the fire. The report revealed that the rescue work of the July 17 fire incident in the building ended at 3 o'clock the next morning. 16 Chinese people died in the fire. According to the preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by construction work, and the specific circumstances are not being investigated further.
It is said that the burning building has a total of 14 floors, and a lot of dense smoke rose to the blue sky at the scene of the incident. The source of the fire was found on the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th floors, and 11 burned bodies were found during the on-site search and rescue.
