China demands Philippines withdraw missile system

China demanded Philippines immediately withdraw its medium-range missile system, issuing threats in response.
According to Chinese state media on December 26, China's Foreign Ministry called on the Philippines to fulfill regional commitments by withdrawing the missile system. China warned it wouldn't stand idle if its security interests were threatened.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning claimed the "Typhon" missile system is an offensive strategic weapon, not defensive. She alleged the Philippines' cooperation with the US on missile deployment creates geopolitical tensions and threatens regional security.
Philippine Defense Minister Teodoro defended the deployment as legal, asserting Philippines' sovereign right to acquire defense equipment regardless of foreign objections.
On December 23, Philippines announced plans to purchase US "Typhon" land-based missile systems to protect maritime interests. In April, the US conducted joint military exercises in northern Luzon using the medium-range "Typhon" system—its first such deployment in Asia since the Cold War. The US decided to leave the system in Philippines after exercises concluded.
