Arafiya Erie (Arifiya Ali), a Uyghur woman, was re-elected as a member of the Japanese House of Representatives in the parliamentary elections held on October 27.
It has been announced that parliamentary elections will be held in October after the resignation of former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in mid-August this year. Arafiya Erie won re-election as a member of the House of Representatives after the election campaign lasted almost two weeks. She won the Chiba City House of Representatives election in April last year as a candidate for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, where she received more than 50,000 votes, with the special support of former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Erie stressed the need for Japan to follow a strict policy towards China. In an interview with the Hindustan Times on October 27, she spoke about the Uyghur issue, pointing to the emergence of reports and justice about the genocide that the Uyghur are facing, and expressed her regret that the United Nations has not taken effective steps towards this crisis. She stressed that the world, especially Japan, would not accept the full gravity of this issue.
Arfiya Ali was born in 1988 in Fukuoka, Japan, and is fluent in Japanese, Uyghur, Chinese, and English. She studied international relations and international politics at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and worked at the Institute for International Policy in Washington, D.C., the World Bank, and the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations.
According to Kyodo news agency, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party won 215 seats in the House of Representatives in this election, short of the 233 seats needed to form a government, meaning the party will need to cooperate with other parties.
